Autonomous Community Project

Could autonomous communities bethe answer to the world's current issues and the future for purposeful living? If so, then a model community needs to be set up to test the building process and the personal experience. This action page attempts to gather knowledge on how a autonomous, sustainable community might be set up and once fully scoped out, gather the land, people and skills needed to start it.

The Project Premise

Knowledge and methods already exist that would allow an autonomous, sustainable community to be set up, one that is self-sufficient and independent of central systems.

Land can be collectively bought to establish a location and landscape without the need for debt or financing.

Technologies such as 3-D building will soon enable ordinary people to build their own modular home that blends into the environment and is completely sustainable. Based on knowledge from people who have already built their own sustainable 'Earthships', a simple and cheap, open-source design that is maximally efficient and easy to maintain is already feasible. Such a basic design can then be customised by owners to give it their own personal touch.

An autonomous community is already capable of generating all its own power so that it is independent of the central system. It can also have its own water source, purification processes and waste management that recycles all waste back into the local environment.

An autnomous community can also produce all of its own food, by establishing or taking over a local farm that is owned and farmed by the community using sustainable farming methods. The rest of the land within the community boundaries can also be regenerated, encouraging the return of its indiginous biodiversity.

Communal facilities can be established within the community to encourage inter-learning, sharing and group projects.

A hybrid of home-based, online and inter-generational learning can provide schooling, knowledge and relevant skills for children and adults.

The need for money can be greatly reduced and possibly even removed, such that working for external organisations is unnecessary.

A community insurance scheme would make external insurance unnecessary.

Transport within the community would be without roads. Electric vehicles stationed at the boundaris of the community can be recharged by the community's own autonomous power supply and be shared for travel outside of the community.

An intranet can connect the community to the outside world using the fastest speeds available and can be ring fenced to allow for complely secure internal communication as well as stopping all forms of cyber threats getting into the community.

All collective decisions within the community can be made through an intranet where projects and issues are proposed, considerations are discussed and the whole community can vote on necessary actions. In this way everyone who contributes to the community will also have a say in its direction and on any 'common' policies.

This community would be a haven from debt, the need for external employment, government welfare support and reliance on central systems. It would be safe, have no government surveylance, no access to commercial interests and no exploitative companies. It would be integrated into nature and put people's wellbeing first rather than the dictates of commercial interests. It would still have access to the external world and everything it offers, but no need to be attached to it unless an individual chooses to do so.

To start such a community first requires detailed planning and the accumulation of the knowledge necessary to bring it together. This website seeks to build a portal for the information needed. It will then require a range of people with the various necessary skills to form a self-sufficient community. The cost of the project will then need to be split between the participants or raised from donations.

The outcome and experience of the project can be used to inform policy makers, journalists and those interested in setting up their own autonomous communities on the benefits and challenges of this model becoming a new and porgressive way for peope to live.
